Frequently asked questions

Water pumps are there to move, pressurise or transfer water from point A to point B. You will find them in all sorts of domestic, commercial and agricultural settings. From household supply and rainwater tanks to irrigation, drainage, bores and general water management.

It really comes down to your source of water, the flow rate and pressure you need for the size of pipe, lift height and the way you design your system to use it. For example, an irrigation system may have a pump that delivers constant pressure to your sprinklers or drip lines. Whereas if you are having drainage issues, you would want a submersible sump pump in order to get rid of excess water in a hurry.

That is dictated by the size of the system and where your water is coming from. For garden and landscape work we see surface, jet and multistage pumps as well as pressure pump systems being popular. If you are drawing from an underground bore then a bore pump is the way to go.

Yes. A surface pump is put in above ground to pull water from a dam, tank or pond. A submersible is made to run underwater and you will commonly see them in wells, sumps, bores and some water transfer jobs. It is a matter of where the water is and how you need to move it.

Many are suitable for the job. A dedicated rainwater tank pump can feed your outdoor taps, laundry, toilets or even the garden, depending on how you have things set up. If you need consistent pressure from the tank a pressure pump system is often the answer.

These are designed to automatically provide pressurised water the moment you open a tap or an irrigation zone. They are a staple for homes, small farms and commercial properties where you can not be without reliable pressure.

By using several impellers these build up more pressure than a standard single-stage model. Multistage pumps are good for boosting pressure and any application where you need something strong and consistent.

They are used to draw from an underground well or bore. Typically submersible, they handle stock water, household supply and agricultural needs according to the depth of the bore and what the system requires.

There is no one answer as it depends on your budget and what you need the pump to do. At The Irrigation Hub we deal with the likes of Lowara, Grundfos, Pentair, DAB, Ebara, Calpeda and Bianco Pumps so our customers have plenty of choice for their water transfer or irrigation requirements.

They are widely used in those kinds of setups across the board. The right model for you will depend on the installation type, your water source and the flow and pressure figures you are after.

You have to look at the vertical head, suction lift, pipe friction loss and the application. If it is too small you don’t get the volume or pressure you want and if it is too big it is inefficient. To get it right, match the pump to the pipe work and the water source.

For most installations yes. Things like non-return valves, float switches, filters, pressure controllers and tanks are all part of making the system easier to run and protecting the pump.

The team at The Irrigation Hub can help you sort it out. Give us the details on your property, water source, pipe size and what you want to achieve and we will put you in touch with a pump that fits the bill. Call us on 1300 474 482 to discuss your project. If you live in and around Brisbane, stop by and we can help plan your irrigation and water pump needs.
